GPS, or Global Positioning System, is the latest thing from falling out during the Trekking to visit your aunt Louise. Last year you had to rely on landmarks, your Handy or best man at the corner gas station, he knew where to take every time. Today about a hundred bucks you can get a little gadget that will tell you specifically where you are, anywhere on earth. Using basic math rather than a complex system, you can in the desert, lost to, press a button and your GPS to tell you specifically where you so you can hopefully find your way back home.

So what exactly and how GPS works?

GPS is really a system difficult and expensive, but the basic concept of this system is very simple.

GPS system is a group of 27 satellites that orbit the earth. Twenty-four of them in operation and 3 backup if one fails. Original system was created for you the U.S. military but eventually opened to others.

Each one of these satellites, weighing in at around 4000 kilograms, around the world at about 12.000 miles to the 2nd round to do a full every day. Orbit is set so that at any point in the last 4 of these satellites can be seen from any place on earth.

Recipients who receive job praising formed these signals satellites have found 4 or more of these satellites, figure out each and the distance from the information that determines where the planet itself is the recipient. Then sends this area in the back of a man who happens to be in possession of the recipient. Based on simple mathematical operations called primary trilateration. Briefly explain how this works, let's say someone tells you that you are 10 miles from Newark, NJ, who tells you that you are 15 miles from Maplewood, NJ, and a third person tells you that you are 20 miles from Woodbridge, NJ. To take three facts you can find out where you are, especially since each radius from any distance when will intersect at one point tied. The problem is that where there.

To really do a number of positions from the GPS receiver needs to know 2 things. Hatiani at least 3 satellites above you, the distance between you and every one of the satellite. Because only 3 satellites or parts needed is because the earth itself can act as four parts. DIY GPS receiver of radio waves is a form of electromagnetic energy to travel the speed of light, the recipient can actually determine how far the signal has traveled by time how long it takes to get the signal from each satellite.

In the next article in the GPS we will go on, especially how this system works to measure distances.
